Madrid develops Logistics Microhub to boost Low Emissions Delivery

The Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT), in collaboration with the sustainable urban distribution company CITYlogin, has launched a pilot initiative for the capillary distribution of goods.

Madrid is an important logistics hub, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean TEN-T corridors. Madrid City Council is implementing several measures to improve air quality, such as restricting traffic in the city centre.

This new pilot project is a public-private collaboration between Madrid and CITYlogin, which will see the establishment of a logistics microhub in the facilities of the underground parking of the Plaza Mayor. Companies will be able to make use of this 200-metre squared facility for last mile delivery to homes, supermarkets or neighbourhood stores, using 100% electric motorcycles that will be charged in the parking lot itself.

This project is being completed in collaboration with the European project LEAD. LEAD is working on the creation of digital twins of urban logistics networks in six European cities (Madrid, The Hague, Budapest, Lyon, Oslo and Porto) to test and represent different innovative urban distribution solutions of goods. The aim is to address the requirements of the growing economy on demand, aligning competitive interests and contributing to better planning of sustainable urban logistics.

While this initiative is currently in the pilot phase, the city is, however, exploring other locations for similar logistics models.
